Microneedling | Advanced Skin Rejuvenation with Dermapen 4

A clinically studied collagen-stimulating treatment designed to improve skin texture, fine lines, acne scarring and overall skin quality.

Microneedling is one of the most versatile and extensively researched treatments for skin rejuvenation, helping to improve the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven texture and early signs of ageing.

At Peau Skin Health, we use Dermapen 4, an advanced professional microneedling device designed to deliver precise, controlled treatments while minimising unnecessary trauma to the surrounding skin.

Suitable for the face, neck, décolletage and selected areas of the body, microneedling can be tailored to a wide range of skin concerns and treatment goals.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses fine, sterile needles to create thousands of controlled micro-injuries within the skin.

These micro-injuries stimulate the skin's natural wound-healing response, encouraging the production and remodelling of collagen and elastin.

Collagen provides structure and firmness, while elastin contributes to the skin's flexibility and resilience.

As the skin repairs itself, microneedling can gradually improve its texture, firmness and overall appearance.

Unlike treatments that rely primarily on surface exfoliation, microneedling works by stimulating biological repair processes within the skin.

Why Dermapen 4?

Not all microneedling devices are created equal.

Dermapen 4 is a professional microneedling system developed by DermapenWorld, incorporating advanced technology to improve treatment precision, consistency and safety.

FDA-cleared technology

Dermapen 4 has received FDA 510(k) clearance for specified indications. It is also marketed with CE marking, while DermapenWorld reports ISO 13485 quality management certification.

Advanced 16-needle technology

Dermapen 4 uses a cartridge containing 16 ultra-fine needles, capable of creating up to 1,920 microchannels per second.

Precision-controlled needle depths

Adjustable needle depths allow treatments to be tailored to different areas of the face and body, skin thicknesses and individual concerns.

Advanced vertical needling

Unlike traditional dermal rollers, Dermapen 4 uses an automated vertical needling action designed to minimise unnecessary dragging and tearing of the skin.

Dedicated scar treatment technology

Dermapen 4 features a specialised scar treatment setting, with needle depths of up to 3 mm for appropriately selected areas and indications.

Anti-contamination technology

Its cartridge system incorporates protective features designed to minimise fluid backflow and cross-contamination.

These features allow us to deliver highly customised microneedling treatments, from superficial skin rejuvenation to more targeted scar treatments.

What can microneedling treat?

Fine lines and wrinkles

Stimulates collagen production to gradually improve skin texture and soften the appearance of fine lines.

Acne scarring

Particularly beneficial for certain types of atrophic acne scars, helping to remodel collagen and improve uneven skin texture.

Enlarged pores

Can improve the appearance of enlarged pores by supporting the surrounding skin structure and improving overall texture.

Skin laxity and loss of firmness

Encourages collagen remodelling, potentially improving mild skin laxity and skin quality. It is not a substitute for surgical lifting.

Uneven skin texture

Helps smooth rough or irregular skin and improve its overall appearance.

Sun-damaged and ageing skin

Supports skin renewal and can improve some visible signs of photoageing.

Scars and stretch marks

Can be used on selected areas of the body to improve the appearance and texture of certain scars and stretch marks.

General skin rejuvenation

An option for clients looking to maintain skin quality and support collagen production as part of a longer-term skin health plan.

How does microneedling stimulate collagen?

As we age, our skin gradually produces less collagen, while existing collagen fibres undergo structural changes.

This contributes to fine lines, reduced firmness and changes in skin texture.

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries that initiate the skin's natural wound-healing process.

This involves three main stages:

1. Inflammation and repair

The skin recognises the controlled injury and activates its natural repair mechanisms, including the release of growth factors involved in tissue healing.

2. Collagen production

Fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and other components of the skin's extracellular matrix, become involved in the repair process.

3. Collagen remodelling

Over the following weeks and months, newly formed collagen undergoes gradual remodelling, contributing to improvements in skin structure and texture.

This process takes time, which is why the full benefits of microneedling are not immediately visible.

Is microneedling scientifically proven?

Yes. Microneedling has been investigated in numerous clinical trials and systematic reviews, with particularly encouraging evidence for acne scarring and facial rejuvenation.

Unlike many newer aesthetic treatments, microneedling has a substantial body of published research examining both its effectiveness and safety.

83% patient satisfaction

A 2025 systematic review examined 21 studies involving 723 patients undergoing microneedling for facial rejuvenation.

Researchers found that approximately 83% of patients reported satisfaction with their treatment.

The review also found relatively low rates of reported adverse effects, although the researchers highlighted the need for more standardised methods of measuring improvements in skin ageing.

33 studies reported improvements in acne scarring

A systematic review published in Dermatologic Surgery examined 33 articles investigating microneedling for acne scars.

All 33 reported improvements in the appearance of acne scarring, although the extent of improvement varied.

This supports microneedling as an established option for improving certain types of acne scars, particularly depressed or atrophic scars.

A favourable safety profile

A systematic review examining 85 published articles concluded that microneedling is a relatively safe treatment.

Most reported side effects were temporary, including redness, swelling, dryness and sensitivity.

However, complications such as pigmentation changes, infection and scarring can occur, particularly when treatment is performed inappropriately or unsuitable products are introduced into the skin.

What does this mean for your skin?

Microneedling is not a miracle treatment, and results vary between individuals.

However, the available research supports its use for improving certain types of scarring, skin texture and visible signs of ageing.

Its combination of clinical evidence, versatility and generally manageable recovery makes it a valuable option for long-term skin rejuvenation.

What happens during a microneedling treatment?

Every appointment begins with an assessment of your skin, concerns and treatment goals.

Your skin is thoroughly cleansed and prepared before treatment.

Dermapen 4 is then passed across the treatment area using carefully selected needle depths and speeds.

The treatment can be adjusted throughout the appointment depending on the area being treated and the desired outcome.

You may experience a scratching or prickling sensation, particularly over bony areas such as the forehead.

Following treatment, appropriate soothing and hydrating products are applied to support skin recovery.

Treatment time: Approximately 30–60 minutes, depending on the area.

Downtime: Typically 24–72 hours of redness, although recovery varies.

Recommended course: Usually 3–6 treatments, depending on the concern. Each treatment is spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

What is the downtime?

Microneedling involves controlled injury to the skin, so some temporary inflammation is expected.

Immediately following treatment, your skin may appear red and feel warm or tight, similar to mild sunburn.

Common temporary effects include:

  • Redness and warmth

  • Mild swelling

  • Tightness and dryness

  • Increased skin sensitivity

  • Occasional pinpoint bleeding or minor bruising

  • Mild flaking during recovery

Most clients experience a significant reduction in redness within 24–48 hours, although deeper treatments may require longer recovery.

Your skin may remain slightly dry or sensitive for several days.

Appropriate aftercare is essential, including gentle skincare, sun protection and temporarily avoiding irritating active ingredients.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on your individual skin concerns and the improvements you are hoping to achieve.

For general skin rejuvenation, a course of approximately 3 treatments may be recommended.

More established concerns, such as acne scarring or significant textural irregularities, often require 4–6 treatments or more.

Appointments are generally spaced around 4–6 weeks apart to allow the skin time to recover and begin remodelling collagen.

Although some clients notice improvements in skin smoothness and radiance relatively quickly, collagen remodelling is a gradual process.

Results typically continue developing over several weeks and months following treatment.

Maintenance treatments may be recommended to support longer-term skin health.

Is microneedling suitable for everyone?

Microneedling is suitable for many skin types, but it is not appropriate for everyone.

Treatment may need to be postponed or avoided in cases of:

  • Active skin infections

  • Active inflammatory acne in the treatment area

  • Compromised or irritated skin

  • Certain inflammatory skin conditions

  • A history of abnormal scarring or keloid formation

  • Certain medications or medical conditions that affect healing

Clients with rosacea, pigmentation concerns or particularly sensitive skin require individual assessment, as treatment may not always be appropriate during periods of active inflammation.

A consultation is carried out before treatment to assess suitability and establish realistic expectations.
